COCKROACHES OF THE MIND
Negative and judgmental thoughts are
major impediments to spiritual growth. Unbridled negativity and
judgment rapidly clog your mind and make spiritual growth nearly
impossible. If you don’t rein them in, they will block the flow of
positive thoughts into and out of your mind.
Negative and judgmental thoughts are
tough to eradicate. Although, you can never totally eliminate these
two troublemakers, there is no need for them to play a dominant role
in your life.
JESUS TOOK A HARD LINE ON JUDGMENTAL
THOUGHTS
Jesus had many things to say about
judgmental thinking, and none of those things were good. He indicated
that God is the only One qualified to judge how other people live, and
if you are smart, you will mind your own business, and keep your
judgmental thoughts to yourself. Even better, you will leave the
business of judgment up to God, and change the focus of your life to
love.
Jesus made it clear that none of us
are qualified to act as judge or jury on the compromises and choices
that other people make. Although we may not like what they do, only
God is qualified to look inside that person’s heart and be their
judge.
Jesus warned us that the way we judge
other people becomes the standard by which we are judged. If we adopt
a harsh and critical way of assessing the behavior of others, the
boomerang of judgment will soon come back and hit us right between the
eyes. When judgmental words leave your lips, it’s not long before
they return, and you must taste their bitter flavor as your own
choices and compromises come back to haunt you.
KEEP A JOURNAL OF NEGATIVE AND
JUDGMENTAL THOUGHTS
People dominated by negativity and
judgment have a destructive bias in their thinking. They don’t
understand they have a problem, and this blind spot makes positive
change difficult. Why would they want to change and become like the
rest of the world which is so flawed and full of problems.
These people spend their lives
trapped in negativity and judgment. Self-righteousness clogs up
their mind, and until these people figure out they have a problem,
there is no hope for them.
The only way they will ever turn
their lives around is for them to figure out on their own that they
have a negative and judgmental bias in the way they think. It will
not do any good to tell them. They will tell you that you are being
negative and judgmental if you criticize them. The pot will be
calling the kettle black.
Hopefully, these people will
eventually notice that not everyone shares their critical outlook. If
they start monitoring and recording their own negative and judgmental
thoughts in a journal, there is hope. When they write down every
negative and judgmental thought that pops into their mind, it isn’t
long before they have a long list of this type of behavior in
themselves. If they do this day after day, it gradually dawns upon
them that they have an unhealthy bias in the way they think.
