DON'T LET YOUR NOTHING BUT STEAL YOUR
SENSE OF WONDER
God gave you a sense of wonder to
remind you of his love. Nevertheless, your sense of wonder is fragile
and must be handled with care. You must put it into the intensive
care unit of your mind and focus on it to keep it alive. If you lose
your sense of wonder, you lose a precious treasure. It can disappear,
and you may never notice that it’s gone.
If your sense of wonder dies, you can
resuscitate it using the power of focus. What you focus upon expands
into your life. Focus restores your sense of wonder and gives you the
power to make ordinary moments into extraordinary ones.
Children have a natural sense of
wonder that continually expands until the pressures of life extinguish
it. Only a few people go through their entire life with their sense
of wonder intact. These people are full of life, and for them there
are no ordinary moments.
YOUR “NOTHING BUT” WILL STEAL YOUR
SENSE OF WONDER
For most people, life is a
reductionist experience in which every significant event is explained
away. The miracles of life are reduced to scientific explanations
that suck the vitality out of the experience. The miracles become a
“nothing but”.
A bird’s song is nothing but a
vibration of sound waves. A sunset is nothing but the refraction of
sunlight through the clouds as the sun moves below the horizon. A
rainbow is nothing but the splitting of the invisible light spectrum
by the prismatic effect of raindrops. The color of a rose is nothing
but the reflection of a wavelength of light. A twinkling star is
nothing but light being irregularly refracted by different layers of
the atmosphere. Man is nothing but an accident of evolution in a
blind and mindless universe.
The more scientific explanations you
put into your mind, the more your sense of wonder withers. When
everything has been fully explained, you feel supremely intelligent,
and your sense of wonder is gone. When the job is complete, you have
demythologized everything, and you are left with practically nothing.
The only thing that remains is eyes
that don’t see, ears that don’t hear, and a heart that cannot
experience the meaning of life.
ARE YOU BLIND AND DEAF?
Everything in the natural world bears
the fingerprints of God.
When God created the world He had a master
plan. He decided that everything He touched would turn to beauty.
God doesn't do ugly. He only does beauty, and He does it on a grand
scale. Beauty is God's fingerprint. In your sense of wonder you
discover the fingerprints of God.
Everything that God creates is beautiful.
I've been alive for more than half a century and during all those
years I've never found anything created by God that wasn't beautiful.
I think that's why I love beauty so much. It's the closest I can come
to actually touching God. It's like God and I are living on opposite
sides of a two way mirror. On his side He touches things and makes
them beautiful. On my side I touch the same things and experience his
beauty. I can see the tip of his finger and my finger coming together
in a million beautiful places around the world. I use my sense
of wonder to touch the finger of God.
Your sense of wonder is closely
linked with your ability to see and hear God in your world. When your
sense of wonder dies, you become blind and deaf to God’s presence.
There are two types of blindness.
The first type happens when your eyes cannot see light. The
second type happens when your eyes have lost their sense of wonder.
There are two types of deafness.
The first type happens when your ears cannot detect the vibrations of
sound. The second happens when your ears have lost their sense
of wonder.
One of the great tragedies of the
twenty-first century is eyes that don’t see and ears that don’t hear.
Although your eyes may be full of exciting images, you cannot see God
working in your life. Your ears are full of wonderful sounds, but you
cannot hear God speak.
