REAL POWER: MAXING OUT ON GOD'S LOVE |

ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE SEEING GOD IN
YOUR WORLD?
God is at work everywhere, at all
times, and in all things. Unfortunately, when you lose your sense of
wonder, you lose your ability to see God’s presence in the ordinary
events of life.

City dwellers living in concrete
jungles find that their sense of wonder is continually at risk. No
stars twinkle in their sky at night. Light pollution extinguishes
every star from the sky. Smog filters out the sunlight. Pigeons
replace the hundreds of species of bird life found in the
countryside. Dogs, cats, and rats are the only animals wandering the
streets. Pets locked in cages and animals in zoos replace the
thousands of species found in the wild. Wet smog replaces the earthy
smell of fresh rain. Snow has a brownish discoloration.

People have difficulty appreciating
God’s presence when they can’t see stars twinkling in their skies.
Smog is a powerful filter that hides God from their eyes. It’s hard
to feel God’s presence in a concrete jungle that has brown snow and
animals locked in cages. It’s not surprising that city dwellers often
lose their sense of wonder, because they live in a world in which man
has extinguished the natural beauty and replaced it with inferior
substitutes. The wonders of the natural world have been replaced with
man-made sights and sounds that don’t satisfy their inner instinctive
longings.

MAN-MADE WONDERS WILL NOT KEEP YOUR
SENSE OF WONDER ALIVE
Man-made wonders will not keep your
sense of wonder alive. When your sense of wonder is only man-made,
you have lost the game of life. The twenty-first century is full of
amazing things. There are suspension bridges, impressive tall
buildings, massive ships, cruise missiles, and laser-guided smart
bombs. The list of man-made wonders grows longer each day. The more
time you spend looking at the list, the less time you have to be
impressed by the natural wonders in your life. Although man-made
wonders can at times marginally improve your life, they tend to amaze
rather than satisfy you. They may distract and entertain you, but
they don’t give your life meaning. Man-made wonders are cheap
substitutes for the real thing.
Here is a list of natural wonders:
Clean air, clean water, oak,
mahogany, pine, teak, lions, tigers, elephants, the Serengeti, Maasi
Mara, oceans, mountains, streams, reefs, whales, tropical fish, grass,
glaciers, snow, summer, winter, spring, fall, penguins, walruses,
Ayres Rock, Grand Canyon, Galapagos, Yellowstone, sunrise, sunset,
wind, clouds, rain, seeds, flowers, milk, mushrooms, watermelons,
pumpkins, stars, sun, moon, deserts, beaches, polar bears, smiles,
laughter, joy, walking, talking, thinking, winking, dancing, skipping,
running, breathing, holding hands, hugging, kissing, black people,
white people, children, babies, noses, arms, legs, hearts, love,
caring, honesty, sharing, vision, hearing, emotion, swimming, and
sleeping under the stars.

The list of natural wonders is
infinitely long if you keep your sense of wonder alive. If you lose
your sense of wonder, there is nothing on your list.
TAKE THE SENSE OF WONDER TEST
When was the last time you had a
sense of wonder related to God’s presence in your world?
If you have not felt a sense of
wonder in the past twenty-four hours, you may have eyes that don’t see
and ears that don’t hear. You are in big trouble. If you continue in
that state, you will find a progressive loss of meaning as you grow
older. You will end up with a life full of “nothing buts”, and you
will eventually ask, “Is that all there is?”

The fact that you are alive means you
won the lottery of life. Just being here makes you a winner. You hit
the jackpot and won first prize. Your sense of wonder contains a
complete list of all the prizes you have won. You are the luckiest
person in the universe.
Affirmation:
I can see God’s love in the birth of a child. I can hear God’s voice
in the sound of laughter and joy. I can see the beauty of God’s
pallet painted in the sunset. I can see his infinite power in the
billions of galaxies He created and hurled into space. I can feel his
care when the warmth of the sun shines on my face. I can see the
twinkle in his eyes in the stars at night. I can see reflections of
his power in the lightning, and hear echoes of his power in the
thunder. Every time a baby is born, I know that God has not given up
on the human race. I can hear God speak in the silence of the
desert. I can hear God sing in the songs He gave to each bird. I can
feel God’s love in the love I feel for my own children. All of these
are ways God speaks to me. God speaks quietly with his voice of
love. Everywhere and at all times, God is at work in my world. God
is always present in my sense of wonder. If I lose my sense of
wonder, I lose my sight and hearing. I lose God, and I lose the
meaning of my life. My sense of wonder is fragile, and I must handle
it with care. I will use the power of focus to keep my sense of
wonder alive.
